Holistic Conscience as seen in SpaBusiness.com

At Six Senses spas, we knew we would have greater success in making a difference to wellness in the world if we started providing tools and information on earlier stages in human development, rather than trying to change longer-standing habits. This, combined with guest demand to offer wellness services to their children, motivated us to trial some holistic family workshops with visiting natural health practitioners at our Evason resorts in Hua Hin and Phuket, Thailand.

Positive feedback from guests exceeded our expectations and the resulting return rates has enhanced revenues. After conducting a feasibility analysis, we made the decision four months ago to employ natural health practitioners on a continuing basis. Plans are now afoot to roll this concept out to our other family resorts.

Education is an integral part of the holistic approach to wellness and these workshops empower children to make positive lifestyle choices by giving them health, fitness and nutritional knowledge and tools.

We will offer different one-to-two-hour workshops every day, some for adults, some for children from the age of five, and some that allow parents and children to learn together.

Topics covered will include and introduction to yoga, breathing and meditation techniques, self-administered massage, personal hygiene, skincare, good nutrition and even smoothie-making. During a five to seven-day stay, the variety of workshops on offer should enable the whole family to learn at least two skills a day.

Workshops will be run by experts, including naturopathic doctors, nutritionists and traditional Chinese medicine and ayurvedic practitioners. Many are parents themselves and possess intuitive child-communication skills. Care will be taken not to overload children with information; they will learn and experiment in a fun setting. And although they will learn that wellness is not just about pampering, a spa treatment menu for children will also be available.

Due to Six Senses’ environmentally conscious philosophy, we also run a Sustainability Series of workshops that teach children how to look after the environment. The resorts’ tropical location sallow for many interesting projects – children are taught how to recycle and make paper, the art of composting and how to grow their own herb garden, with practical lessons on using herbs in salad.

We haven’t eve started promoting our wellness programmes for children and families yet, so guests are pleasantly surprised when they’re offered this benefit. Our workshops take place in designated areas of the resorts to ensure they don’t hinder the spa experience of our other guests, and they have certainly added to the perceived value of Six Senses Vacation.

GAINING A WORLD PERSPECTIVE

My international experience made me poignantly aware of many global issues. These included matters such as economic affairs, environmental issues such as water shortage, climate change and the need to reduce CO2 emissions as a necessary input towards my social responsibility. All these issues were also a consideration when reviewing the most cost effective and environmentally friendly way of running a spa or salon that contributed to my quest for making a difference. Prior to my overseas experience, I was aware of positions available on cruise ships. I was certainly less aware, however, of the huge need for staffing in hospitality that could cross-train in both hotel/resort management as well as spaspecific positions. The Rooms/Accommodation department has similarities to the spa department in that they both require check-ins and check-outs of guests, and all the aspects required during the guest's experience such as housekeeping/room clean and tidy, occurs every hour, rather than every 24 hours for a hotel room. Jacques-Olivier Chauvin, CEO of Relais and Chateaux, presented a strong case of the value of spas in connection with the hotel industry at the 2007 ISpa Conference. This is a positive step forward for our industry as in the past many hotel companies viewed spas as a 'necessary evil', oh dear! For my next assignment in Asia it was primarily my Beauty Therapy background that gave me the skills to head a very interesting project. I was required to establish policies and procedures and support the company to maintain its goals and objectives by providing them with a point of difference from their competitors. I was required to design and establish the whole operation with policies and procedures that supported both holistic human health and ecological issues. Below I have outlined some of my areas of responsibility: a) Area Spa Director for Thailand construction, opening and operations of the Earth Spa at Evason Hideaway, Hua Hin, which won the 2007 Spa Asia Eco Awards. b) Development of Six Senses Spas private label Skin Care Product range — from the conceptual stage to implementation process, as well as formulation and supervision of the skincare products — both professional and retail. The related training requirements for implementation into existing and new spa developments were also created.
